Refractive Shifts in Four Selected Artificial Vitreous Substitutes Based on Gullstrand-Emsley and Liou-Brennan Schematic Eyes

Abstract: The Gullstrand-Emsley schematic eye is a convenient and accurate model for predicting refractive shifts for hydrogels and encapsuled balanced salt solution substitutes in PPV eyes. The Liou-Brennan schematic eye is recommended for silicone oil and heavy silicone oil in PPV eyes and for all four substitutes in PPV plus lensectomized eyes and PPV plus IOL eyes. In addition, the encapsuled balanced salt solution changes the refraction little in either schematic eye.

“…Furthermore, the advantages of the good mechanical, optical, and biocompatible properties of FCVB have been illustrated previously [31,32]. There is sufficient time to prevent retinal re-detachment due to PVR, which usually develops within 3 months of the primary RD (retinal detachment) repair; the risk for re-detachment is greatest at about 2 months after the initial repair.…”

“…In previous studies, we used a new strategy and rationale to fabricate the artificial vitreous substitute using FCVB [18][19][20] and first demonstrated that the FCVB can restore the structure and partial functions of a detached retina that are not easily reattached with silicone oil. 21 Patients in this predicament cannot obtain an intact eyeball and are forced to live with the outcomes of atrophy.…”

“…16,17 In previous studies, we proposed a new strategy to replace the natural vitreous body using a novel foldable capsular vitreous body (FCVB). [18][19][20][21] The FCVB consisted of a thin, vitreous-shaped capsule with a tube-valve system created using computer and industrial technology. After foldable installation into the eye, a balanced salt solution (BSS) could be injected into the capsule and inflated to support the retina and control the intraocular pressure through the tube-valve system.…”

“…Therefore, despite half a century of effort to replace the vitreous body of the eye, an ideal and permanent vitreous body has yet to be found. 11,18 In our previous studies, [19][20][21][22] we proposed a new strategy to avoid the above complications using a novel foldable capsular vitreous body (FCVB). The FCVB consists of a thin vitreous-shaped capsule with a tubevalve system made using computer and industrial technology.…”
