Reflexology: A randomised controlled trial investigating the effects on beta-endorphin, cortisol and pregnancy related stress

Abstract: Reflexology is used for various pregnancy related complaints. A three-armed, pilot randomised controlled trial was conducted to test changes in physiological and biochemical stress parameters. Ninety primiparous volunteers experiencing low back and/or pelvic girdle pain (LBPGP) were recruited to receive either six reflexology or footbath treatments or usual care. Primary outcome data included pain intensity and frequency measured on a visual analog scale (VAS), and salivary beta-endorphin and cortisol levels. … Show more

“…The result of this study is consistent with McCullough study, that elaborates that 61 out of 90 pregnant women (divided into 6 groups) receiving reflexology treatment see pain frequency decreasing by as much as 1,63 points and an increase of beta endorphin level by 15,18% (reflexology group) [17]. Massage is a relaxation technique designed to alleviate pain by reducing the secretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline, leading to increased endorphin.…”

“…Beta endorphin is released into the blood stream from the pituitary gland as a response to an episode of acute pain and stress, and it helps alleviate pain, lower pain perception, and increase pain threshold. The concentration of beta endorphin typically is examined from blood, plasma, or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) [17].…”

“…A total of 912 records were excluded after removal of duplicates and screening of abstracts and titles. Then, all full-text articles were evaluated for eligibility, and 21 records were excluded for reasons such as they were not randomized [ 20 – 30 ], did not include relevant outcomes [ 31 33 ], included foot reflexology as a part of a multimodal intervention [ 34 38 ], lacked adequate control group [ 39 ], has yet to be officially published [ 40 ]. Finally, 26 remaining articles with 2,366 participants were investigated by qualitative analyses.…”

“…In a randomized controlled study, no effects on the onset of labor could be determined as a result of acupressure within 97 h [50]. In women who received foot reflexology treatments during pregnancy, no adverse side effects have been reported in studies [51][52][53].…”
