Reflex occipital lobe epilepsy

Abstract: Photosensitivity is a typical feature of photosensitive epilepsy which is usually considered a form of idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Partial seizures featuring visual symptoms are rarely reported in photosensitive epilepsy. In this study, we describe 13 neurologically normal patients in whom daytime seizures were always induced by television and began with elementary visual hallucinations, followed frequently by vomiting, headache and then secondary generalization. Three patients additionally reported noctu… Show more

“…Such responses are typically found in absence of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, or epilepsy with grand mal seizures on awakening [6]. Although PPRs are most frequently generalized, photic stimulation has the potential to trigger focal occipital epileptiform discharges [17,18]. Besides its importance in increasing the diagnostic yield of routine EEG and better defining the type of epilepsy, IPS has other potential benefits that were not specifically addressed in this study [3].…”

“…Photosensitivity is defined as an abnormal clinical and/or electroencephalographic (EEG) response evoked either by intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) or by visual stimuli in daily life 1 , 2 . Examples of environmental photic stimulation include electronic flicker (usually television), strobe light, and flickering sunlight 3 , which is easy to neglect unless specially inquired.…”
