Reflections on the four facets of symmetry: how physics exemplifies rational thinking

Abstract: In contemporary theoretical physics, the powerful notion of symmetry stands for a web of intricate meanings among which I identify four clusters associated with the notion of transformation, comprehension, invariance and projection. While their interrelations are examined closely these four facets of symmetry are scrutinised one after the other in great detail. This decomposition allows us to carefully examine the multiple different roles symmetry plays in many places in physics. Furthermore, some connections … Show more

“…We are now in a position to stipulate how AEEN symintentry (symintentry-based modeling) can generate St5 (see Figure 1 for the outline). To do that, we propose that S4, the four facets of symmetry, i.e., SyBM (Mouchet, 2013), constitutes the structure of SyBM. That is, S4 realizes St5 through AEEN.…”

“…As a fundamental aspect of the perception of phenomena [53], symmetry is one such devise that is both a discovery and an invention [54]. During the twentieth century, the development of quantum physics and relativity came with a semantic shift of the word "symmetry" in accordance with the increasing power of it as a conceptual instrument [55]. Symmetry, as a harmony of proportions [56], developed as fundamental to successful scientific prediction because without this invention all that is identifiable about facts is the binary opposition between "effect present/effect absent".…”

“…This is exactly the case of the gauge theories, where the imposition of symmetry reveals something about the intercating physical entities. In other words, symmetry is the most genuine example of what we call "physical law" [63].…”
