Reflections from Highway Noise Barriers and Use of Absorptive Materials in the United States

Abstract: For decades, many departments of transportation (DOTs) in the United States have followed widely accepted guidance that single reflections of noise from noise barriers to the opposite side of highways are “generally one to two dBA or less, and therefore not perceptible to the average human ear.” Increases in the average noise level are undoubtedly small, yet the outcry from affected residential communities can be significant and can result in effort and money spent researching the magnitude of sound level incr… Show more

“…In the past, concerns about noise have been expressed by members of the surrounding community in the project area (1). Given the geometry of the residential areas, there is a possibility that in some locations, traffic noise may be reflected from the sound wall on the opposite side of the highway to residences that are otherwise shielded from line of sight to the road surface itself (2). In these cases, it is likely that the addition of absorbing material to the highway face of the sound walls may provide some additional noise reduction.…”
