Reflectarray antenna design with double cutted ring element for X‐band applications

Abstract: In this study, a single layer reflectarray antenna is proposed with variable patch sized unit cells and suggested for enhancing the bandwidth with small overall dimensions for X‐band applications. The novel unit cell consists of double cutted ring geometry. 13 × 13 unit cells reflectarray is covering an 162.5 × 162.5 mm2 ultrathin square substrate with εr = 6.15 dielectric permittivity and 0.042 × λ0 thickness. In order to obtain larger and smoother phase curve, 2 mm air gap is inserted between substrate and g… Show more

“…At the element design level, several broadband techniques are introduced in the literature to improve the bandwidth behavior of phasing elements in reflecting metasurfaces 11 18 . Recently, a novel broadband technique has been proposed based on the polarization rotation of the impinging waves from the feed which makes the metasurface work in the cross-polarization mode 19 .…”

“…There are different types of reflectarrays, such as planar microstrip reflectarrays [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ] and dielectric resonator reflectarrays [ 7 , 8 , 9 ]. The main feature of the reflectarray is that its radiation characteristics can be manipulated by tuning the geometrical dimensions of its unit cells [ 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”

“…The design challenge of the traditional microstrip reflectarray is the problem of narrow bandwidth. [4][5][6] The performance worsened due to the loss of the microstrip in millimeter wave band. The literatures with a variety of design methods to broaden the bandwidth, including a single improved layer structure, with multiple resonances on a single layer, 4 and a broadband unit can be obtained.…”
