Reference model for the implementation of new assembly processes in the automotive sector

Armoring civilian vehicles requires specialized knowledge and experience that many armoring companies lack as they are not direct or indirect suppliers of vehicle manufacturers. This limits their access to automotive quality and manufacturing certifications or detailed vehicle designs, which can result in loss or malfunctioning of automotive components during the armoring process. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the challenges faced by Brazilian civilian armoring companies and identify opportunities for improvement in their production processes. Qualitative research was conducted using a questionnaire-based survey of eight specialized firms in Brazil, as well as literature related to DFMA, design for manufacturing and assembly, quality, automotive, and ballistic references. The study results include detailed armoring operation steps, qualitative survey reports, and helpful literature references for armoring practitioners to generate a standard armoring procedure for different vehicle models. Following best practices in automotive and armoring procedures collected in the survey responses can standardize and enhance ballistic protection operations while preserving the original vehicle systems' functionalities and warranties. This work provides valuable information for armoring companies to improve their operations and interfaces with automotive systems and follow automotive and ballistic references.

The rapid development of today’s smart automobile with increasing functionality and complexity, which results in rising requirement and cost for its troubleshooting service in the after-sales stage. Hence, to keep the firm’s competitive strength, effective design knowledge utilization of automotive created from the task model can promote the feasibility making of a troubleshooting procedure by offering available relationships and semantic scheme of task. The proposed architecture primarily consists of base, field and application three tiers. A formalized representation of ontology, OWL, is used to organize the base filed. The filed tier includes extensional notions and relations for integration of troubleshooting and a criterion repository for verifying solution feasibility, which is depicted in SWRL. In the application tier, a deducing module is generated on the basis of ontology and criterion deduction. To enhance this semantics, in this research, a task modeling and deduction mechanism with feature-intensive ontology are proposed to clearly represent correlative notions for automotive troubleshooting planning (ATP). A criterion-based deducing module on the basis of OWL-DL and SWRL is also applied to specify implied relations through merging deducing modules (DMs) to deal with complex feature data. Eventually, this proposed architecture is examined and verified with an instance relevant to automotive troubleshooting procedure.

Failures during the product development process can lead to problems in product quality and reliability, which in turn can cause serious harm to its end-users. When such failures are discovered after a vehicle is already in usage, a safety recall is required, which can incur in potential damage and losses to brand image. Recall rates of multinational companies can be affected by regional law enforcement and quality requirements of local governments. Despite its importance for the safety of end-users, the automotive vehicle recall process in Brazil is little studied by the academy. The main objective of this project was to collect data and clarify how the automotive vehicle recall process is carried out in Brazil and how it could be improved by comparing it with Germany, a country with very advanced regulations in this sector and with a fleet of vehicles similar to that of Brazil. To achieve this goal, the work provided an overview of the available data in both countries, developed a scalable method for comparing recall rates and an analysis of recall rates of the main OEMs in operation. The work concludes using this data to draw insights on how these processes can be improved.
