This chapter examines the effects of international trade on the French labour market. Between 1977 and 1993, trade with countries with GDP per capita less than that of France resulted in job losses of around 350,000, mostly low-skilled workers. However, this loss was mainly due to changes in trade balance rather than the factor content of trade. Trade affected the productive efficiency of industries and the average skill of their labour demand. These effects were not specific to trade with developing countries.

The development of research studies concerning the emergence of intra-industry trade is fruitful interaction between theoretical explanations and empirical methods to measure this phenomenon. The foundation of indicators to measure the intensity of intra-industry trading caused the rise of theoretical models explaining the determinants of these trade flows. It also contributed to the debate on the need to distinguish, in empirical analyses, intra-industry trade in horizontal differentiation from that in vertical differentiation.

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to our understanding of the empirics of trade in tourism services by studying bilateral intratourism trade for a sample of 14 member states of the European Union during the period 2000-2004. The authors apply the most up-to-date and robust method available in the literature to distinguish vertically and horizontally differentiated products: the Azhar and Elliott method (2006). The results clearly show that, contrary to conventional wisdom, a large proportion of European countries simultaneously exports and imports comparable amounts of tourism services. Moreover, the predominance of vertical differentiation in these intra-tourism flows suggests that international specialization is taking place in Europe within the tourism sector itself, along the spectrum of quality.
