Reduction of neoclassical transport in the l/ν regime in torsatrons

Abstract: A method of reducing the neoclassical transport coefficients in the l/u regime in £ = 3 and 8 = 2 torsatrons is presented. By appropriately modulating the pitch of the winding law of the helical conductors and applying an additional external transverse magnetic field, a reduction factor of two to four can be achieved.

“…Technical and financial difficulties related to the works performance, remote location of manpower -all these obstacles made it impossible to complete the works. Besides, under an order, the works had to be stopped due to the start of the Russo-Swedish war [3]. As Perry wrote later, by 1701, some floodgates were almost completed, and the canal was halfway trenched.…”

“…[8]. The a = 1 case is interesting inasmuch as neoclassical losses [9] and the plasma equilibrium currents [10] can be reduced (note that, owing to a different reading of the angle tf, the signs of oc in this paper are opposite to those in Refs [9,10]).…”

“…7, helical satellite harmonics, inducing the poloidal variation of the helical ripplewell depth, can reduce considerably the toroidal drift of charged particles and, therefore, their direct and indirect losses. This fundamental discovery lays the foundations of the conception of the ''drift-optimized'' stellarator configuration, [7][8][9][10][11][12]15 in which plasma confinement is improved considerably, in comparison with the classical stellarator.…”
