Reduced glomerular filtration rate due to loss of nephron mass may be an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis

Abstract: The factors 'low GFR' and RNM are risk factors for greater atherosclerotic plaque burden. Patients with RNM should undergo regular control examinations to monitor arterial blood pressure and treat hypertension if it occurs.

“…The study may be subject to an uncontrollable bias that can occur in retrospective studies, and the fact that the study design is retrospective limits its impact. The method used to quantify the aortic atherosclerotic burden [21, 22] underestimates the actual atherosclerotic burden because it detects only mature plaques, not so-called soft plaques. Most of the variability of the aortic atherosclerotic burden was explained by the parameters examined; the remaining 36.4 % variability must still be considered large.…”

“…The strength of this study is that the method of calcium scoring used [21, 22] objectively quantifies the hard plaques of the aorta. Its objectivity sets it apart from all other methods of quantification.…”

“…The aortic calcification was quantified without knowledge of the jaw or dental status using a volumetric calcium scoring method (13). For this process, a defined segment of the abdominal aorta from the celiac trunk to the bifurcation was used.…”

“…26 The hypothesis that kidney size and resulting kidney function lead to a slight protection against atherosclerosis could potentially explain the somewhat higher plasma renin in patients with MRAs, 12 namely, that it is due to the greater kidney length. The somewhat higher blood pressure in patients with MRAs in the study cited could have been a selection bias effect, as most of these patients presented owing to arterial hypertension.…”
