Reduced Adiponectin Level Is Associated With Severity of Coronary Artery Disease

Abstract: SUMMARYAdipocyte-derived adiponectin has an antiatherosclerotic effect that acts independently of its antidiabetic effect. Plasma adiponectin levels are generally low in subjects with coronary artery disease. In this study, the relationship between the plasma adiponectin level and the severity of coronary artery disease, as assessed using the Gensini score, an index for the severity of coronary artery stenosis, was investigated. The subjects of the study were 104 patients (72 men and 32 women; BMI, 23.5 ± 3.3 … Show more

“…The combination of low adiponectin levels (<4.5 μg/mL) and !3 MetS components did not result in a significant increase in the prevalence of Regarding the association between the levels of circulating adiponectin and CAD, our data indicated that patients with a low adiponectin concentration had a significantly higher incidence of multi-vessel CAD (Figs. 2B, 3, A, 3B), which was consistent with previous reports (15)(16)(17). On the other hand, other reports have indicated that plasma adiponectin levels do not predict future risk of CAD (18,19 …”

“…In a 10-year follow-up of healthy elderly patients, higher adiponectin levels were associated with a lower risk of CAD independent of other risk factors such as increased BMI and insulin resistance (51). Serum adiponectin levels are also inversely related to the severity of CAD in nondiabetic patients (52,53). In a study of 207 men, those with stable CAD and complex coronary lesions had significantly lower plasma adiponectin levels than those with stable CAD and simple lesions (54,55).…”

“…For example, it inhibits monocyte-endothelial adhesion, endothelial cell apoptosis, transformation of macrophages into foam cells, and smooth muscle cell proliferation (8 -10). Importantly, plasma adiponectin levels show an inverse correlation with coronary artery disease (43) and serve as a risk factor. Administration of globular adiponectin protected ob/ob mice from diabetes and apoE Ϫ/Ϫ mice from atherosclerosis (44).…”
