Rediscovery and range extension of Ciliopagurus liui Forest, 1995 and description of a new species of Pagurus Fabricius, 1775 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura: Paguroidea) from the Kerala State, southwestern India

Abstract: Two species of paguroid hermit crabs, Ciliopagurus liui Forest, 1995 (Diogenidae) and Pagurus spinossior n. sp. (Paguridae), are reported from the Kerala State, southwestern India. Ciliopagurus liui, is first recorded from the Indian Ocean. This species was originally described on the basis of a single male specimen from the Tonkin Gulf in the South China Sea, though its geographical range also included Japan, based on literature. Supplemental description and illustrations are provided for better understanding… Show more

“…Fossil species are also characterized by globular, convex surfaces with the outer surface of the propodus densely granulated (Via, 1959; Schweitzer and Feldmann, 2001; De Angeli and Caporiondo, 2017). Some recent species (i.e., P. spinossior Komai, Reshmi, and Kumar, 2013) bear similarities with the scarce material recovered, so we tentatively assign the new material to this genus.…”

“…Although stomatopods occur along the entire Indian coast, most published records are from localities on the eastern coast. Recent studies of commercial trawl by-catch primarily along the southern and southwestern coasts (Tamil Nadu and Kerala) resulted in numerous new records and discoveries of decapod crustaceans (Komai et al 2013;Kumar et al 2013;Ng et al 2016Ng et al , 2017Yang et al 2017). The pan tropical stomatopod genus Lysiosquilla, which includes the largest known stomatopods, comprises 12 species, five of which are reported in the Indo-West Pacific region.…”
