Field studies were carried out in 1997 and 1998 in northwest Italy with the aim of determining the effects of weedy rice competition on rice growth dynamics and yield. 'Arborio' (medium-high tall size, high early vigour) and 'Thaibonnet' (semi-dwarf size, low early vigour) rice cultivars were grown in competition with weedy rice at four densities (0, 10, 20, and 40 plants m -2 ). For both cultivars the plant height, the aboveground biomass and the number of tillers were determined at different intervals. With some exceptions, all the measured rice growth parameters were not remarkably affected by weedy rice interference. Weedy rice plants grown in competition with 'Arborio' were generally taller and produced more biomass. Weedy rice competition resulted in up to 50% (in 'Thaibonnet') and 48% (in 'Arborio') yield losses. The yield losses observed in both varieties were primarily related to the reduction of yield components, and of panicle density and number of filled grains per panicle, in particular.

O uso intenso de herbicidas com o mesmo mecanismo de ação tem selecionado espécies de plantas daninhas resistentes como, por exemplo, o arroz-vermelho (Oryza sativa L.) com resistência à mistura formulada dos herbicidas imazapyr + imazapic. A competição de plantas daninhas ocasiona perda de produtividade das culturas, geralmente crescente, quanto mais semelhantes forem suas características morfofisiológicas. Ainda, a capacidade competitiva do biótipo geralmente é alterada pela característica de resistência, e seu conhecimento é fundamental para a compreensão da dinâmica da população resistente. Diante disso, o objetivo da pesquisa foi estudar a habilidade competitiva entre biótipos de arroz-vermelho resistente e suscetível ao herbicida imazapyr + imazapic com arroz irrigado, utilizando o método de série de substituição. Para isso, foram conduzidos experimentos com a cultivar Puitá INTA CL, competindo com o biótipo de arroz-vermelho suscetível ou resistente. As populações de plantas por vaso totalizaram 24, o equivalente a 942 plantas m-2. Para o arroz-vermelho suscetível ou resistente ao herbicida, a competição interespecífica é favorável em relação à competição intraespecífica, enquanto para a cultura do arroz irrigado o competidor independe. A cultivar Puitá INTA CL, em geral, apresenta habilidade competitiva equivalente aos biótipos de arroz-vermelho suscetível ou resistente ao herbicida imazapyr + imazapic, competindo pelos mesmos recursos do ambiente.

A análise da competitividade foi efetuada por meio de diagramas aplicados a experimentos substitutivos e uso de índices de competitividade relativa. As variáveis estudadas foram afilhamento, estatura, área foliar e massa seca da parte aérea das plantas. O arroz-vermelho modificou negativamente o número de afilhos, a estatura e a massa seca da parte aérea das plantas dos cultivares IRGA 417 e EEA 406, demonstrando habilidade competitiva superior. Os cultivares de arroz IRGA 417 e EEA 406 não modificaram suas características morfofisiológicas quando em competição, independentemente da proporção de plantas entre ambos, demonstrando habilidades competitivas equivalentes. Palavras-chave: características morfofisiológicas, competição, interferência, plantas daninhas.ABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to compare the relative competitive abilities between two rice cultivars and a red rice biotype. Greenhouse experiments were carried out at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, in the 2001/2002 growing season, in a completely randomized design, with four replications. The treatments were arranged in a replacement series assay, with five plant proportions of rice cultivars and competitor biotype being established: 100:0; 75:25; 50:50; 25:75 and 0:100, respectively. Rice was represented by the cultivars IRGA 417 and EEA 406, and the competitors by a red rice genotype as well as by EEA 406 cultivar, mimicking red rice. Competitive analysis was accomplished through diagrams usually applied to replacement series studies, plus use of relative competitive indices. The plant variables evaluated were: tillering, plant height, leaf area, and shoot dry mass. Red rice negatively modified plant tillering, plant height, leaf area, and shoot dry mass of both rice cultivars, proving superior competitive ability. The rice cultivars IRGA 417 and EEA 406 did not change their morpho-physiological plant characteristics when in association with each other, regardless of plant proportions among them, presenting equivalent competitive abilities.
