ABO saliva blood groups, 21 enzyme, 7 serum protein and the haemoglobin systems of 56 baboons and 61 vervets from South Africa were tested. Baboons were found to have a high frequency (0.728) of blood group A, 6 PGD and transferrin systems were polymorphic, and haptoglobins were subtyped. Variation also occurred in CA, MDH, PGK, PGM₂, Pep B, α₁-antitrypsin and caeruloplasmin systems. Vervets were polymorphic in ADA, α₁-antitrypsin and caeruloplasmin systems and haptoglobins were subtyped. Variation also occurred in Pep D system. Phenotype frequencies varied according to area of origin in both species.

“…Ten transferrin alleles occur in M. mulatto, three of them at fre quencies above 10%, while in M .fuscata variants are rare [Goodman, 1968;Ishimoto et al, 1967], Haemoglobin variants are remarkably frequent in M. fascicularis (irus) from mainland Asia [Barnicot etal., 1966[Barnicot etal., , 1970 but were not found in M. mulatto, M.fuscata or M. cyclopis [Ishimoto et al, 1968a[Ishimoto et al, , b, 1970. Variations attributable to six alleles for phosphohexose isomerase have been reported in macaques, their frequencies varying between species [Ishimoto, 1970], and Omoto et al [1970] have reported five alleles for eq-antitrypsin, again with some wide interspecies differences in frequency. Tashian et al [1971 ] examined 9 macaque species and found seven alleles for carbonic anhydrase I (CA I) and three for CA II with some large interspecies differences in the frequencies of certain alleles.…”

Blood samples from Cercocebus (19), Presbytis cristatus (22) and Colobus (2) together with additional vervet, patas and talapoin material have been examined electrophoretically for haemoglobin, serum proteins and seven red cell enzymes. Cathodal haemoglobin variants were found in some Cercocebus atys and in the single C. galeritus and were shown to differ from the anodal component in the α-chains: both chains of C. albigena differed in charge from those of human Hb-A and other mangabeys. Polymorphic variation of the anodal PGM bands was seen in mangabeys and in a few vervets and patas. Transferrin polymorphism was detected in mangabeys and the vervet. The taxonomic implications of the results are discussed. In some respects the two colobines differ from other cercopithecoids but also from one another. The distribution of polymorphic variation in cercopithecoids is discussed in relation to current concepts of the spread of neutral mutations.

Intraspecific red cell enzyme variation in the pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina)

The erythrocytes of 350 pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) were examined for electrophoretic variation of hemoglobin and 26 enzymes. Seven enzymes showed variation in more than 1% of individuals: phosphoglucose isomerase, phosphoglucomutase-1, soluble NADP-dependent isocitric dehydrogenase, peptidase A, peptidase C, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate mutase, and acid phosphatase. Variation with lesser frequency was found in soluble glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, phosphoglycerate kinase, lactic dehydrogenase, and hemoglobin. Only eight samples were tested for esterase D, and one of these had a variant phenotype. Enzymes with no clear variation were adenylate kinase, adenosine deaminase, phosphofructokinase, hexokinase, pyruvate kinase, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, aldolase, phosphoglycerate mutase, phosphopyruvate hydratase (enolase), phosphoglucomutase-3, and superoxide dismutase. There was father-to-son transmission of PGI, PGM-1, peptidase C, 6PGD, 2,3-DPGAM, NADP-ICD, and acid phosphatase variants, suggesting that these loci are autosomal as in man.
