Abstract: Although anemia in chronically anemic hematology outpatients was not associated with low StO(2) and THI levels, RBC transfusions were successful in improving these variables.

“…Transfusion is an effective treatment method for anemia [6], and it was thought that transfusion may reduce the rate of anemia-related postoperative complications. However, transfusion itself has some adverse effects including pulmonary complications, graft versus host disease, and the transmission of infectious diseases.…”

“…In a clinical study using hand held microscope for measurement of sublingual microcirculation in cardiac surgery patients, we showed that anemia was associated with a low functional capillary density which increased in value following blood transfusion in the sublingual capillary density in cardiac surgery patients (20). In a parallel study in anemic hematologic patients we demonstrated that such a blood transfusion was associated in a parallel improvement in sublingual microcirculatory oxygen availability using sublingual near infra red spectroscopy (21). These studies showed that anemia is associated with microcirculatory reduction in RBC availability resulting in tissue hypoxia.…”

“…This situation is more commonly encountered during severe infections such as sepsis (6). Although the studies of our group on sepsis patients have yielded the same results, clinical studies we performed on cardiac and haematological patients showed that transfusion has a beneficial effect on tissue perfusion and oxygenation (6)(7)(8)(9).…”

“…Another study that showed no effect of storage duration on tissue oxygenation was performed by our group (8,12). In that prospective randomized clinical study, 20 haematology out--patients were evaluated in two groups.…”
