In this work, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) waste-derived carbon fibers (CFs) coupled with TiO2 for photocatalytic hydrogen production have been investigated. The CFs were found to be promising for enhancing visible light absorption and preventing photoinduced charge carrier recombination. The role of interface interaction and morphology was further investigated by synthesizing nanocomposites through physical mixing (CFs/TiO2) and sol–gel methods (CFs/TiO2-S). The optimized 3CFs/TiO2 produces 2.87 times more hydrogen than using only TiO2. This noticeable enhancement was due to efficient charge separation in the presence of CFs with high visible light absorption. Comparatively, the CFs/TiO2-S nanotexture produced H2 at 2268.4 μmol g–1 h–1, which is 6–12 fold greater than that for CFs/TiO2 and pristine TiO2 samples. Using the sol–gel approach, TiO2 was effectively attached over the entire surface of CFs, enabling good interface interaction and efficient charge carrier separation, resulting in significantly enhanced H2 production. Among the various operating parameters, glycerol as a sacrificial reagent was promising to improve H2 yield, whereas it has a lower photostability than methanol after five consecutive cycles. The highest AQY of 26.3% for H2 production was obtained with 150 mg of catalyst loading under low-intensity light irradiation. This study introduces a new technique to recycle solid waste CFRPs to produce CF-based composites that might be advantageous to boost performance in solar energy-related applications.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is a material that can be used to strengthen building structures. This study aims to test two CFRP material types, CFRP-A and CFRP-B, for structural strengthening. CFRP-A is an imported product, while CFRP-B is a locally produced product with more than 40% domestic content. Using local materials in CFRP aims to reduce costs for strengthening building structures. In this study, structural strengthening of beam elements with CFRP-A and B was carried out, where there was an increase in the shear strength of the existing beam structure by 31.147% and 25.154%, respectively. In addition, flexural strength also increased from the existing beam structure, which was 35.431% and 21.515% for CFRP-A and CFRP-B, respectively. From the results of this study, it is clear that CFRP-A is superior for shear and flexural strengthening. However, CFRP-B, a local product with a difference in shear strength increase from CFRP-A of 5.993% and at a relatively cheaper cost, can be considered for shear strengthening. Therefore, CFRP strengthening is an alternative to structural strengthening because it is easy to use, does not require much labor, and does not require many connections. Abstrak Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) merupakan material yang dapat digunakan untuk memperkuat struktur bangunan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji dua jenis material CFRP, yaitu CFRP-A dan CFRP-B, sebagai perkuatan struktural. CFRP-A adalah produk impor yang tersedia di pasar Indonesia, sedangkan CFRP-B merupakan produk yang diproduksi secara lokal dengan tingkat kandungan dalam negeri lebih dari 40%. Penggunaan bahan lokal dalam CFRP bertujuan untuk mengurangi biaya dalam memperkuat struktur bangunan. Dalam penelitian ini, dilakukan perkuatan struktural pada elemen balok dengan CFRP-A dan B, dimana terjadi peningkatan kuat geser dari struktur balok existing masing-masing sebesar 31,147% dan 25,154%. Selain itu, kuat lentur juga meningkat dari struktur balok existing yaitu sebesar 35,431% dan 21,515% untuk CFRP-A dan CFRP-B. Dari hasil penelitian ini terlihat jelas bahwa CFRP-A lebih unggul untuk perkuatan geser dan lentur. Namun CFRP-B yang merupakan produk lokal dengan perbedaan peningkatan geser dari CFRP-A sebesar 5,993% dan dengan biaya yang relatif lebih murah, CFRP-B dapat dipertimbangkan untuk perkuatan geser. Oleh karena itu, secara keseluruhan perkuatan CFRP dapat dipertimbangkan sebagai alternatif perkuatan struktur karena mudah digunakan, tidak membutuhkan tenaga kerja yang banyak, dan tidak memerlukan banyak sambungan.

Pyrolysis is already an established recycling method to recover the carbon fibers of end-of-life composites. However, the pyrolysis process removes the fiber sizing. Fiber sizing is a critical step in composite material production, influencing adhesion, protection and overall performance. In this study, recycled carbon nonwoven reinforcements made from pyrolyzed carbon fibers were pretreated to improve the mechanical properties of polyamide and polypropylene composites. The pretreatment involved applying specific coatings (sizings) on the nonwoven by spraying. Pretreated and non-pretreated composites were prepared by compression molding to investigate the impact of the fiber pretreatment on the tensile properties and interlaminar shear strength. The tests were performed in the 0° and 90° directions of the composite plate. The results revealed that pretreatment had little effect on the polyamide composites. However, significant improvements were obtained for the polypropylene composites, as an increase of more than 50% in tensile strength was achieved in the 0° direction and more than 35% in the 90° direction. In addition, the interlaminar shear strength increased from 11.9 MPa to 14.3 MPa in the 0° direction and from 14.9 MPa to 17.8 MPa in the 90° direction.
