Recurrent subdural hematoma secondary to headbanging: A case report

Abstract: Background:“Headbanging” is the slang term used to denote violent shaking of one's head in time with the music. This abrupt flexion-extension movement of the head to rock music extremely rarely causes a subdural hematoma.Case Description:A 24-year-old female was admitted to our department because of right sided partial seizure and acute or subacute subdural hematoma over the left cerebral convexity. She had no history of recent head trauma but performed headbanging at a punk rock concert at 3 days before admis… Show more

“…Notably, several reports exist describing spontaneous subdural bleeding in young patients after a roller coaster ride. 40,41 Also, vigorous movement of the body and head as seen in some contemporary dance forms such as breakdance 42 and "headbanging" (abrupt flexion-extension of the head, seen commonly in hard rock and heavy metal genre) [43][44][45] has been outlined in several cases as a cause of subdural hematoma. We therefore postulate that repeated axial landing loads together with angular forces, resulting from performing some skateboard tricks, could shear the bridging veins and provoke the bleeding in our case.…”

“…A myriad of injuries within this population are presented in the literature. These include several cases of subdural haemorrhages, a single case of traumatic aneurysm of the cervical vertebral artery, basilar artery thrombosis, carotid dissection and a mediastinal emphysema [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. It is also important to note that injuries secondary to head banging can occur outside of a musical setting.…”

“…There are various reports of head and neck injuries secondary to head banging in the literature [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. However, formal injury research in this area is minimal.…”
