“…Nevertheless, the immunohistochemical data supports the clinical observation that, besides visual disturbances, most patients with LCD suffer from recurrent and slowly healing corneal epithelial erosions [8]. Clinically, patients with recurrent erosions reveal very weak adhesion of the corneal epithelium to the underlying stroma [9]. We focused on basement membrane constituents and cell-matrix adhesion molecules, since these components cooperate to anchor epithelial cells to the underlying stroma.…”

“…However, we must be cautious in using PTK (or any other surgical technique) a short time after LASIK, even with the small ablation depth performed in our cases. 33,34 Our 2 patients comprise a small case series with short-term follow-up. Most studies show that EBMD tends to occur within the first 2 years after PTK, 28,31 but the fast, subjective visual improvement in our cases is promising.…”

“…It has been shown that excimer photorefractive keratectomy and laser in situ keratomileusis alter the wound healing response of the cornea [11]. The effects of PTK on wound healing have been described and are indeed desired in the treatment of RCE to improve the postoperative epithelial adhesion [5, 12], but there is no known effect of excimer laser treatment on the speed of corneal epithelialization. To avoid any bias between the groups, both groups were treated with the same laser settings under the same conditions, and care was taken to apply local anesthesia and fluorescein staining necessary for the photographs in equal dosages at the same time intervals.…”

“…In addition to local medical treatment, bandage lenses, debridement and anterior stromal puncture, the condition can be treated with excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) [2,3,4]. Due to low recurrence rates with few complications, this procedure is now widely recommended as treatment for RCE not responding to medical therapy [5]. …”
