Investigations were carried out for purification of oily wastewater by a combined of ultrafiltration/reverse osmosis (UF/RO) processes. Laboratory-scale UF using polysulfone (PS) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes were employed with typical oily wastewater collected from API unit of Tehran refinery. The PAN membrane showed higher rejection, more permeation flux and less fouling resistance than the PS membrane. Both membranes produced permeate with oil and grease contents generally less than 5 ppm. Rejection of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD5) were found to be 65% for UF treatment. In this work, Hermia's models were used to investigate the fouling mechanism involved in UF of the oily wastewater. The results showed that the best fit to experimental data corresponds to the cake layer formation model followed by the intermediate blocking model for both the UF membranes. For further treatment of the UF permeates, RO was applied using a thin film composite polyamide membrane. The rejection of COD, BOD5 and total dissolved solid (TDS) after UF/RO treatment increased up to 98%, 98% and 95%, respectively. The results showed that the final permeate has very high quality and even better than that is currently introduced to the cooling towers in Tehran refinery.

During the past decade, the growth in membrane research and technology advanced and multiplied in usage for many industries including water and wastewater. A major limitation of the application is due to membrane fouling. In this work, the construction, start-up calibration and testing of a membrane unit as well as an examination into the fouling and cleaning aspect of the ceramic membranes are investigated. An aqueous solution containing precipitate is fed to the unit in order to observe fouling behaviour. Effluent wastewater from a bioreactor, CUBEN, is also tested with the unit and membrane cleaning is performed using various chemical agents. For both chemically enhanced backwash (CEB) and membrane soaking, hydrochloric acid cleaning agent (<1%w) produces best flux recoveries of 72.7% and 82%, respectively. All permeate effluent analysis, resulted in a suspended solids concentration <3mg/L and turbidities <1NTU, which both meet Ontario regulation limits.

ABSTRACT:In this research, polyethersulfone (PES)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) blend ultrafiltration hollow fiber membranes were prepared via phase inversion induced by a dry-jet wet spinning process. The membranes were characterized by water contact measurements, scanning electron microscopy analysis and permeability measurements, and fouling-resistance measurements. The results show that water contacts of the membranes are enhanced by increasing the PAN content in the spinning dope. The results of an experimental study on separation of oil from oily wastewaters are presented. The results demonstrated that the prepared PES membranes are effective in removing chemical oxygen demand (80.6%), total organic carbon (89.3%), turbidity (99.3%), total suspended solid (100%), and oil and grease content (99.7%), and final permeation flux of about 73.5 L/m 2 h. Also, it was found that 75/25 wt% of PES/PAN have higher mechanical strength and good separation performance. Hermia's models were used for prediction of the decline in permeation flux. Experimental data and models predictions were compared. The results showed that there is reasonable agreement between experimental data and the cake layer model followed by the intermediate blocking model. C 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
