Recording of multilevel run-length-limited modulation signals

Abstract: We discuss the use of pulse length modulated recording of run-length-limited sequences of p-ary digits p i ∈ {0, 1, …, p-1}; p ≥ 3, to effect the physical representation of digital data on a storage medium that supports three or more distinct recording levels, or types of marks. p-ary run-length-limited modulation codes that facilitate the implementation of the modulation technique are also described. We also introduce a novel error correction coding technique that enables detecting/correcting errors in the va… Show more

“…In this scheme, user information can be recorded both in the signal amplitudes and the recorded mark lengths. The results of three-level RLL modulation on CD/DVD rewritable discs have been reported [6], [7], [8], [9], and four-level RLL recording on optical disc using photochromic materials has also been realized [10], [11]. Compared with multi-level amplitude modulation, fewer signal levels are required for ML-RLL modulation to achieve the same density increase.…”

“…Recording of three-level RLL modulation signals on CD/digital versatile disc (DVD) rewritable discs has already been reported. [4][5][6] Recently, four-level RLL recording on optical disc with photochromic diarylethene media has also been realized. 7) Constrained codes used in multilevel RLL modulation systems are the M-ary RLL codes, which have at least d and at most k zeros between any two nonzero symbols.…”
