PRML Detection of Multi-Level DVD Channels with Run-Length-Limited Modulation

Abstract: Multi-level optical recording using run-lengthlimited (RLL) modulation is a novel method to significantly increase the information recording density without changing optical or mechanical parameters. In this paper, the experimental results of four-level RLL modulation on read-only digital versatile discs (DVD-ROM) are introduced. Since multi-level readout signals have heavy inter-symbol interferences (ISI), partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detection scheme is proposed for multi-level RLL DVD channels… Show more

“…For the multilevel recording channel discussed in [15] and [37], they investigated that the PR model is closed to the actual ML-RLL DVD channel with transfer function (2) of the S = 4.6 channel. For theoretical experiments, the PR channel has impulse response h=(1,2,2,1) denoted as PR(1,2,2,1).…”

“…Over optical research in recent years, photochromic materials in [9] [10] [11] [12] have the characteristic of the absorption altering nonlinearly with the exposure energy is applicable for non-saturation multi-level recording and also allow four-level marks to be written on the disc. Multi-level DVD-ROM driver with conventional setup is studied in [13] and [14], which raises the intuition of studying over 4-level RLL modulation on DVD-ROM discs in [15]. However, it is critical to maintain higher quality of 4-level recording systems, which has raised great concern in [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] for combining RLL and error correcting code (ECC).…”
