Reconceptualizing Scientific Literacy: The Role of Students’ Epistemological Profiles

Abstract: Abstract:In this theoretical article we construct an argument for a pedagogical perspective based on the notion of epistemological profiles for scientific literacy for primary and secondary education. Concurrently, we offer a discussion of the implications of this proposal to the preparation of teachers and the development of their pedagogical skills. Underlining cultural practices in the construction, communication and validation of knowledge-called epistemic practices which are informed by an ideological per… Show more

“…Nowadays, the 21 st -Century learning issue is a interesting topic that has been researched and developed (Bellanca et al, 2010;Chu, Reynolds, Tavares, Notari, & Lee, 2016;Dwyer, Hogan, & Stewart, 2014). Topics such as critical thinking skills (Miharja et al, 2019;Scott, 2015), problem solving (Binkley et al, 2012;Nithyanantham, Paulmony, & Hasan, 2019), and collaborative learning (Tsuneyoshi, 2016;Vieira, Melo, Avraamidou, & Lobato, 2017), examined from various perspectives are major issues that are believed to be key factors for 21 st -Century learning success (Suwono, 2016;Talat & Chaudhry, 2014). However, other study topics that integrate the process of problem identification, hypothesis design, determination solutions, to application in a multidisciplinary manner indicated to be able to encourage students' thinking skills more comprehensively (Guleker, 2015;Huff, 2014;Thompson, 2011).…”

“…An MLP network is a predictor (also known as inputs or independent variables) function that minimizes the predictive error of target variables (also known as outputs). This generates a predictive model for one or more targetdependent variables based on the values of the available predictor variables, organized in a layer-wise structure where each successive layer stores more abstract representations of the data than the previous layer [40].…”

“…One of the skills referred to is scientific literacy skills (Nofiana and Julianto, 2018). Science and technology are the most prominent characteristics needed in the modern world, and thus, scientific literacy is a requirement that must be possessed by every individual (Vieira, Melo, Avraamidou and Lobato, 2017), especially students. Students are required to master literacy to understand laws, theories, and phenomena, as well as to comprehend the basis of scientific knowledge needed to make decisions (Dragoş and Mih, 2015).…”
