Recoil Processes of Chromium-51 in K2Cr04 Mixed with Alkali Halides

Abstract: Hot atom reactions of recoil 51 Cr in neutron irradiated mixtures of K 2 Cr0 4 with KCl, KBr or KI were studied. The presence of dissolved alkali halides causes a lower yield of radiochromium in the form of Chromate ion.

“…In the doped systems initial retention was found to be different than that of pure crystals. Cationic dopants tend to decrease the initial retention while anionic dopants tend to increase it [4,7]. Cationic dopants, like Ca 2+ doped in K 2 SO 4 , showed reduced initial retention but enhanced thermal annealing compared to their pure crystals after thermal neutron activation [6].…”

“…Over the years, a number of studies have been performed on the chemical behaviour of foreign ions or atoms implanted in crystals of various oxyanionic salts [1,2,4]. It has been inferred that doping by foreign materials or atoms of different valence states possibly changes the distribution of different recoil species as the transient reaction of metastable precursors are modified by the presence of defects in the irradiated matrix.…”
