Recognising hypoglycaemia in older people

Abstract

Hypoglycaemia is an acute complication associated with the use of insulin or sulphonlyureas to treat diabetes. This article will focus on the risks of hypoglycaemia in older people including the signs and symptoms. It will give an overview of diabetes and discuss the specific problems associated with aging in managing diabetes. Poorly-controlled diabetes is associated with long-term complications. Monitoring glycaemic control will be discussed including the research promoting optimal control. A case history will be included to demonstrate the risks of hypoglycaemia in older people. Discussion will include developing an individualised management plan with the patient to promote safe practice for the individual and balancing risks
