Recognising and valuing Māori innovation in the high-tech sector: a capacity approach

Abstract: This paper explores what it takes to develop a common language and shared sense of purpose between Māori and the high-tech science sector. Robotics and automation, 3-D printing, sensors, and digital technologies are shaping New Zealand's economy in fundamental ways. If, as envisioned under New Zealand's Vision Mātauranga policy, Māori contribution to economic growth through distinctive Indigenous innovation is to be recognised and valued, then how this happens in these frontier science domains requires investi… Show more

“…Pākehā anthropologist Rachel Fabish (2019) describes some of her initial efforts to carry out Māori -Pākehā collaboration, tracing the tensions and potentials in using this approach. Indeed, New Zealand has institutionalized the question of Māori -Pākehā collaboration in the Vision Mātuaranga policy, which calls for the incorporation of Māori knowledge into the country's science research and development infrastructure (Ruckstuhl et al 2019). The goal is to make Māori knowledge part of the country's innovations leading to shared economic growth.…”

“…In NZ, there is growing interest in the Māori economy and the economic contributions Māori make to NZ society (Nana et al, 2020). Within the broad fields of science and research, Māori plays a unique role (Ruckstuhl et al, 2019) because NZ has a legislated obligation to engage with Māori in science and innovation (MoRST, 2007). The science sector policy called Vision Mātauranga (VM) outlines this obligation, which seeks to unlock the innovation potential of Māori knowledge, resources and people (MoRST, 2007).…”
