Recoding enhances the metabolic capabilities of two novel methylotrophic Asgardarchaeota lineages

Abstract: Asgardarchaeota have been proposed as the closest living relatives to eukaryotes, and a total of 72 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) representing six primary lineages in this archaeal phylum have thus far been described. These organisms are predicted to be fermentative organoheterotrophs contributing to carbon cycling in sediment ecosystems. Here, we double the genomic catalogue of Asgardarchaeota by obtaining 71 MAGs from a range of habitats around the globe, including deep subsurface, shallow lake, and ge… Show more

“…The number of proposed Asgard phyla has continuously increased in recent years, from 1 in 2015 (Lokiarchaeota) to 18 in late 2021 (Figure 2 ) 1 , 2 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 . In a recent study, Liu et al 13 described six new Asgard phyla from an analysis of 75 metagenome‐assembled genomes (MAGs), while three additional phyla were described by Xie et al 14 from an analysis of 128 new MAGs.…”
