Reciprocity calibration methods for massive MIMO based on antenna coupling

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper we consider time-division-duplex (TDD) reciprocity calibration of a massive MIMO system. The calibration of a massive MIMO system can be done entirely at the base station (BS) side by sounding the BS antennas oneby-one while receiving with the other BS antennas. With an M antenna BS, this generates M (M − 1) signals that can be used for calibration purposes. In this paper we study several least-squares (LS) based estimators, differing in the number of received signals that are being used… Show more

“…Thus, various automatic calibration methods for adaptive BS antennas that are well suited to TDD communication systems have been proposed in previous studies [20,21].We note that some of these methods allow the transmitter and receiver calibration values to be obtained automatically [20][21][22][23][24]. In recent research, the calibration method for massive antennas utilizing the channel reciprocity in a TDD system is proposed [25][26][27].…”

“…The estimation of channel non-reciprocity in TDD based MIMO systems has also been addressed in various works [3], [4], [6], [10], [11]. These studies can be divided into three main categories: The first two refer to such methods which are performed in BS using a reference antenna and are called "selfcalibration" methods [3], [4], [6], [10].…”

These two categories can be further differentiated based on the availability of additional circuitry.…”

“…Not only are theoretical limits of channel state information and pilot contamination [3]- [6], which are linked to array reciprocity calibration [7], [8], subject of ongoing research. Hardware impairments such as I/Q-imbalance, phase noise and power-amplifier non-linearities are considered in literature as well [9].…”
