Recent variations of Ghiacciaio del Calderone, Abruzzi, Italy

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Results of a detailed topographic survey of Ghiacciaio delCalderone, Italy, the southemmost in Europe, are described and compared with those of surveys made in earlier years . Recession and thinning, much affected by micro-climate, have been the predominant state of health during the 20th century. Between 1916 and, volume is estimated to have been reduced by about 90% and area by about 68% .

“…The lower (and wider) ice apron is depressed and completely covered by white limestone rock debris, whereas the upper apron is characterized by the presence of seasonal snow (Pecci et al , 2008). Accordingly, the reduced dimension and the general conditions of the glacier make it an interesting glaciological, geomorphological and environmental witness to global change (Gellatly et al , 1994; D'Orefice et al , 2000; D'Alessandro et al , 2001, 2003; Pecci, 2001).…”

“…In fact, most Mediterranean glaciers experienced signifi cant overall retreat through the 20th century, with only a few minor readvances in some years (Messerli, 1967;McGregor et al, 1995;Gabrovec, 1998;D'Alessandro et al, 2001;Federici and Stefanini, 2001;Çiner,The Calderone glacier in the Italian Apennines is one of the most intensively studied glaciers in the Mediterranean mountains. The glacier retreated through the 20th century, and between 1916 and 1990 its volume is estimated to have been reduced by about 90% and its area by about 68% (Gellatly et al, 1994). In recent years the glaciers split into two portions and the remaining ice is rapidly shrinking (D'Alessandro et al, 2001;Pecci et al, 2008).…”
