A recently developed model for pretreatment and acid or alkaline hydrolyses of lignocellulosic biomasses, including blue agave bagasse (BAB), in twin-screw corotating extruders is extended to the case where enzymes are incorporated into the formulation. The model describes the deconstruction and degradation of BAB, as well as the production of simple sugars at the end of the extrusion process. Experiments using NaOH for delignification and alkaline hydrolysis of BAB, H 3 PO 4 for neutralization, and different enzymatic cocktails for bioextrusion are reported. The effects of temperature, NaOH concentration, enzymatic cocktail used and its concentration, residence time, and configuration of screw elements on degree of degradation and production of sugars are assessed. It turned out that temperature, NaOH concentration, and enzymatic cocktails are the key factors in the extraction and hydrolysis of hemicellulose (H) and cellulose (C) to produce glucose (G). Good agreement between experimental data and model predictions is observed.

Lignocellulosic biomasses (LCB), second-generation biofuels are used as an alternative means to cope with the burning issues of depleting fossil fuels like petroleum products with the added advantage of renewability, lower emission, and lesser pollution. For the increment in the production of LCB biofuels, microbial pre-treatment processes are conducted which accelerates the degradation of organic polymers like lignin and hemicellulose with the activity of potential microorganisms. To increase the efficiency of degradation of hemicellulose, hemicellulolytic fungi including Trichoderma and Aspergillus and other bacteria produce multi-enzymatic complexes like cellulosomes. Similarly, organisms like Tinea versicolor, Dichomitus squalens, Phlebia floridensis, Daedalea flavida, and Phlebia radiata contain lignin-degrading auxiliary enzymes and lignin modifying enzymes like laccase and heme-containing peroxidase which aid in delignification process. Several factors are associated with pre-treatment processes like the type of strain, inoculum load, pH, temperature, fatty acids, C/N ratio, time, aeration, grindability, surface area, particle size, and supplements added. To enhance the pretreatment method, the combination of microbial with physical, chemical, and mechanical methods is suggested which leads to a synergistic effect and better yield of the final product. Overall, biofuels should be more employed and this review aims to bring light to the microbial pre-treatment approaches which can aid in the efficient production of biofuels that can directly contribute to environmental sustainability.

The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction provides a promising catalytic strategy to remove oxygen in biomass‐derived bio‐oil to produce renewable transportation fuels and value‐added chemicals. The development of highly efficient and stable HDO catalysts plays an essential role in biomass valorization. Metal‐zeolite bifunctional catalysts have been well‐developed as the effective HDO catalysts in upgrading lignin‐derived phenolics due to their excellent activity, selectivity, and thermal and hydrothermal stability. However, clarifying the roles of the active sites and their synergistic effect, and establishing an effective structure‐performance relationships in the HDO process still face challenges. In this review, we first survey the conventional catalysts applied in the HDO of bio‐oil, followed thoroughly discussing the roles of metal centers, acid sites, supports, and their impacts on the HDO process of phenolic model compounds or bio‐oil. Finally, a discussion on the stability and deactivation of metal‐zeolite catalysts, especially in the aqueous‐phase HDO reaction, is provided. This critical review offers new insights into the development of state‐of‐the‐art metal‐zeolite bifunctional catalysts with well‐defined porosity and metal‐acid properties for viable biomass valorization.
