Abstract. Surface quality of nuts used in gas pipe joints is an important issue because the surface state affects the fatigue characteristics. Surface defects of nuts produced by warm forging from a stainless steel are observed and the cause of defect generation is discussed based on the numerical results of FEM simulation. It is revealed that there exists the lap defect on the drawn wire surface with an opened end and the surface defects on the forged nut are generated by the tensile stress during forging since there exists a moment at almost the whole area of the billet surface that a tensile stress over 200MPa is generated during nut forging.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the optimum approach to obtain high tensile strength after warm working, without increasing warm deformation resistance during warm working of medium carbon steel. Increase in warm deformation resistance during warm working by addition of Cr is small. On the other hand, Cr has the effect of suppressing the annihilation of dislocations in the air cooling process after warm working. Thus, by adding Cr, the tensile strength after warm working is effectively improved, without increasing warm deformation resistance during warm working. Increasing of Si is effective as a method to obtain high tensile strength after warm working, without increasing warm deformation resistance during warm working, too. Si has an effect of the solid solution hardening. This effect by increasing Si is due to the large temperature dependence of solid solution hardening effect. The control of microstructural factors, that are pearlite fraction and cementite spacing, is not effective as a method to obtain high tensile strength after warm working, without increasing warm deformation resistance during warm working.

緒言The purpose of this research is to clarify the effects of strengthening factors on tensile strength of warm-worked middle carbon steels. The increase in the tensile strength of warm-worked products is realizable by increasing tensile strength of steel before warm-working and work hardening by warm-working. As a strengthening method of warm-worked products by material strengthening, solid solution hardening is effective. Specifically, addition of Si is effective. As a strengthening method of warm-worked products by work hardening, low-temperature working is effective. Also the addition of elements such as Cr which inhibits the annihilation of dislocations can strengthen warm-worked products through increasing work hardening. Material strengthening by decreasing cementite spacing, etc. is less effective in strengthening of warm-worked products. This is by that plate-like cementites are changed to granular ones by warm-working.
