Recent Research Progress in and Future Perspective on Treatment of Parkinson's Disease

Abstract: Background: Clinical features, pathogenesis, and treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) are reviewed as there has been progress in these areas. Summary: PD is a systemic disease of the nervous system as the initial symptom is related to disturbance of the autonomic nervous system, such as constipation or nocturia. Then, the disease progresses to the brain stem involving the nuclei in the pons and the substantia nigra, and inducing sleep and wakefulness disturbances, affect problems such as anxiety and depressio… Show more

“…Advances in genetic sciences enormously helped to target such diseases with novel technologies (Chen and Pan, 2014). A set of allopathic medicine such as dopaminergic medications for PD and related motor disorders (Mizuno, 2014); cholinesterase inhibitors for treating cognitive disorders (Doody et al, 2009); analgesic drugs for pain (Chaudhuri and Schapira, 2009); anti-inflammatory (Tizabi et al, 2014) and antipsychotic drugs for dementia and other behavioral dysfunctions (Desai and Grossberg, 2005) are used to stop the tremor and refractory movement disorders (Okun, 2014). Active and passive immunotherapies are new hopes for AD treatment, though, the adverse effects of these antibodies are the biggest concern of immune related drugs (Chen and Pan, 2014).…”

“…Preventive treatment has two implications [44,45]: firstly, to reduce or stop suffering from the disease, and secondly, to slow down the progression of PD. The TCM compound cream formula (膏方), herbs which may tonify the ‘yin' and ‘yang' functions of ‘Gan' and ‘Shen', vitamin E, Ginkgo supplementary, Ginseng supplementary, R. rosea supplementary, melatonin, deep sea fish oil, and American ginseng may partly present alternative preventive therapies [2,46,47], but there is still a lack of evidence-based research.…”

“…Although, drugs are available in treating the symptoms associated with the ND, therapeutics or preventive medicines for curing/preventing neurodegeneration are not available [ 22 ]. so the problem of how to treat these diseases still persists [ 23 ].…”
