Recent progress of national banking project on homozygous HLA ‐typed induced pluripotent stem cells in S outh K orea

Abstract: Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can be generated by introducing several factors into mature somatic cells. Banking of iPSCs can lead to wider application for treatment and research. In an economical view, it is important to store cells that can cover a high percentage of the population. Therefore, the use of homozygous human leukocyte antigen-iPSCs (HLA-iPSCs) is thought as a potential candidate for effective iPSC banking system for further clinical use. We screened the database stored in the Catholic H… Show more

“…Currently, clinical-grade iPSC haplobanks are already available in South Korea and Japan (16,19,20,26) and similar initiatives are being undertaken in other countries such as Australia (27). The effectiveness of the approach will come from a global collaborative to share haplolines and this implies an effort to standardize the production and quality control by the different banks (28,29).…”

“…Other studies have calculated the coverage of haplobanks for the UK population (15), South Korea (16), China (17) and the U.S. (18). iPSC haplobanks created from cord blood and peripheral blood donors are already a reality in South Korea and Japan (16,19,20).…”

“…In this previous study, chondrogenic markers were expressed in chondrogenic pellets, and the level of ECM was as high as that observed with MSCs. In our previous study, we established 13 CBMC‐hiPSCs that have homozygous human leukocyte antigen types in the good manufacturing practice facility (Rim et al, ). These cells are the first human leukocyte antigen‐homozygous hiPSC lines that were developed as a national cell banking cell source.…”

“…Cord blood mononuclear cell (CBMC)-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) were established and characterized as described previously [28]. In our previous study, we established 13 CBMC-derived iPSC cell lines, characterized by high pluripotency and normal karyotypes.…”
