Recent progress in the LC–MS/MS analysis of oxidative stress biomarkers

Abstract: The presence of a dynamic and balanced equilibrium between the production of reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS) species and the in‐house antioxidant defense mechanisms is characteristic for a healthy body. During oxidative stress (OS), this balance is switched to increased production of ROS and RNS, exceeding the capacity of physiological antioxidant systems. This can cause damage to biological molecules, leading to loss of function and even cell death. Nowadays, there is increasing scientific and clinic… Show more

“…Second, LC-MS/MS analysis which belongs to tandem mass spectrometry separates and detects charged ions according to the mass charge ratio under the action of electric field. It can accurately analyze compounds qualitatively and quantitatively (Aslam et al, 2017 ; Andries et al, 2021 ). The basic principle of western blot is the specific binding of antigen and antibody, which impossible to accurately determine the protein expression level (Kurien and Scofield, 2006 ; Aslam et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Based on LC-MS, the combination of ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and high-resolution MS can strengthen the resolution, sensitivity, and flux of assembly analysis data. Reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) is mainly used to separate non-polar or medium-polar metabolites and has a strong separation and detection capability ( 16 ). LC-MS is more sensitive than GC-MS because they can analyze strongly polar, non-volatile, and thermally unstable compounds, and GC-MS is not up to it.…”

“…Oxidative stress also constitutes the molecular basis for the occurrence of many degenerative disorders such as cancer, arterial diseases, neurodegeneration, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, and kidney disease (Di Meo et al, 2016). Antioxidants play a significant role in the prevention of damage that may occur as a result of oxidative stress when the endogenous defence system in the organism is interrupted, or free radicals are produced in excessive amounts for various reasons, exceeding the capacity of the defence system (Andries et al, 2020;Pisoschi et al, 2021).…”
