Recent Progress in Hybrid Biocomposites: Mechanical Properties, Water Absorption, and Flame Retardancy

Abstract: Bio-based composites are reinforced polymeric materials in which one of the matrix and reinforcement components or both are from bio-based origins. The biocomposite industry has recently drawn great attention for diverse applications, from household articles to automobiles. This is owing to their low cost, biodegradability, being lightweight, availability, and environmental concerns over synthetic and nonrenewable materials derived from limited resources like fossil fuel. The focus has slowly shifted from trad… Show more

“…Materials 2021, 14, 6401 2 of 20 carbon fibers reinforced polymers [15,16,17,18]. Natural fibers are of interest since they can be extracted from renewable sources of animals, vegetable plants, and also minerals [19]. However, the most important disadvantage of FRPs is the difficulty of recycling them.…”

“…Other fibers, such as aramid, boron or basalt, are also being used for very specific applications, but their volumes are irrelevant compared to glass fibers or carbon fibers reinforced polymers [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Natural fibers are of interest since they can be extracted from renewable sources of animals, vegetable plants, and also minerals [ 19 ].…”

“…Low moisture absorption is one of the critical features of PA11, which is caused by increasing the ratio of methylene to amide groups [ 18 ]. Moreover, due to the relatively low processing temperature of PA11 (approximately 185 °C), this polymer is widely used as a matrix in natural fiber-reinforced composites because of the low thermal stability of natural fibers [ 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 ].…”
