Recent modelling advances for ultrasonic TOFD inspections

Abstract: The ultrasonic TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction) Technique is commonly used to detect and characterize disoriented cracks using their edge diffraction echoes. An overview of the models integrated in the CIVA software platform and devoted to TOFD simulation is presented. CIVA allows to predict diffraction echoes from complex 3D flaws using a PTD (Physical Theory of Diffraction) based model. Other dedicated developments have been added to simulate lateral waves in 3D on planar entry surfaces and in 2D on irregul… Show more

“…CIVA is a NDT/SHM simulation and analysis platform, including simulation tools for different NDT techniques, notably ultrasonic models intensively validated [15,16]. System models [17] based on the reciprocity principle have been devised to simulate the ultrasonic response of flaws for various NDT configurations [18]. 2D CIVA FEM is a transient elastodynamic finite element code integrated into CIVA for various applications.…”

“…Note that when doing an asymptotic evaluation of the KA integral on a finite surface, the KA resulting leading terms describe the reflected waves, and the other terms describe diffracted waves by the surface edges which have the same nature (cylindrical or conical wave fronts) but not the same amplitude as those predicted by the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) [55,60]. The main advantage of the Kirchhoff approximation is to provide finite results for the scattered field in the whole space, contrary to GTD [61][62][63][64][65]. One of the main inconveniences of the Kirchhoff approximation (KA) is its incorrect quantitative prediction of edges diffraction, since the approximation of the surface field by the geometrical field is invalid near the edges.…”

“…In order to validate simulations of TOFD configuration [34], results presented in [30] are discussed first. The authors have employed a 2D symmetrical arrangement of the transmitting and receiving probes over a cylindrical mock-up containing a real fatigue crack (Fig.…”
