Recent HIV infection rates among HIV positive patients seeking voluntary counseling and testing centers in the metropolitan region of Recife – PE, Brazil

Abstract: Recent infection occurs mainly among young individuals and heterosexuals, despite a significant proportion of recent infection among MSM. These results suggest that preventive actions aimed at the MSM community remains a challenge and efforts focusing this group should continue to be a priority.

“…The proportion of BF1 variants described in this study is much greater than the rate reported in 169 individuals recently diagnosed as seropositive for HIV1 (2.8%) in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, Northeastern of Brazil [32] and in other study of 84 patients chronically infected with HIV (3.6%) naïve to antiretroviral treatment [33] . This difference is not surprising, because small fragments from different regions of HIV genomes were characterized in the previous studies while we used larger overlapped fragments to sequence the NFLGs, which is the preferred method for accurate characterization of HIV-1 isolates.…”

“…In the present study, 11 of 41 HIV-1 seropositive individuals (27.5%) were classified as recent seroconverters, corresponding to an estimated incidence rate of 4.88%/year (95% CI 2.00%–7.76%), which can be considered quite high. Indeed, in a previous study conducted by our group we found an estimated incidence of 1.68%/year (95% CI 1.26%–2.10%) for people seeking HIV diagnosis at Voluntary and Counselling Centers of Rio de Janeiro [33]. However, when these individuals were categorized by risk behavior, the estimated incidence among MSM was 11-fold higher than among heterosexual men (11.96% year (95% CI 6.10–17.82) vs. 1.12%/year (95% CI 0.55–1.68).…”

This suggests that preventive actions aimed at the MSM community are insufficient, and a priority must be given to efforts focused on this group [33]. Among our study subjects, 7 men were infected with HCV and 8 were infected with HTLV.…”

“…Pernambuco was the second most studied state in Northeast Brazil, with eight articles being published reporting a subtype B frequency range of 54.6% 14 to 81.8%, 31 followed by subtype F (frequency range of 18.2 31 ‐39.8% 14 ). According to our analysis, Pernambuco has a HIV‐1 subtype B frequency (62.8%) 31 .…”
