Recent highlights of experimental research for inhibiting tumor growth by using Chinese medicine

Abstract: To give an overview of contemporary experimental research using Chinese medicine (CM) for the treatment of cancer. As an integral part of mainstream medicine in the People's Republic of China, CM emphasizes improvements in holistic physical condition instead of merely killing tumor cells, which is consistent with the current medical model that advocates patient-oriented treatment. Great progress has been made in experimental research, and the principle aspects include anti-tumor angiogenesis, inducing apoptosi… Show more

“…The biologically active ingredients with TME regulatory and anti-angiogenic activities confirmed in independent and respective studies are considered second-line or potential evidences. Traditional and empirical medicines, including traditional Chinese medicine, have contributed molecules libraries for cancer treatment and preclinical investigations with multi-potency in the modulating phenotype, such as angiogenesis and TME remodeling ( He et al, 2015 ). The plant-derived flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, terpenoids, and coumarin were discussed as dispatchers between anti-VEGF therapy and treatment via immune checkpoint inhibitors ( Kumar et al, 2021 ).…”

“…[ 13 ] In addition, a high dose of TCM Decoction has a similar killing effect on MDA-MB-435 compared with cyclophosphamide; meanwhile, TCM Decoction can reduce the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors FlK-1 in BC tumor tissue, indicating that TCM has an important role in anti-tumor and anti-metastasis effects.
