Recent Developments in Microwave-Assisted Metal-Catalyzed C–H Functionalization of Heteroarenes for Medicinal Chemistry and Material Applications

Abstract: CC Bond formation from direct C-H activation is now recognized as a powerful and straightforward strategy for the synthesis of complex molecules and especially for late-stage functionalization. Many of these reactions allow a streamlined route to bi(hetero)aryl compounds with applications in medicinal chemistry as well as in organic materials. Since high temperatures and long reaction times are often required for C-H activation, microwave irradiation has emerged as a suitable tool. This short review gives an o… Show more

“…Formulation of a practical strategy for arylation of heterocyclic molecules or heteroatom-based nucleophiles is of paramount importance and a powerful tool to architect the key building blocks in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry . In the realm of arylation chemistry, the hypervalent iodine arylating compound i.e., diaryl-λ 3 -iodanes, (well known as diaryliodonium salts) have witnessed a dramatic upsurge as an efficient and versatile aryl-transferring reagent, either in metal-free or transition-metal-catalyzed methods .…”

“…Recent trends directed toward improving the sustainability of C–H activation include the use of Earth-abundant 3d base metal catalysts and alternative energy sources, such as microwave irradiation, , mechanochemistry, photochemical methods, electrochemical methods, and continuous flow techniques, among others. Furthermore, heterogeneous metal catalysts set the stage for the recovery and reuse of valuable catalysts, which further substantiates the green nature of the C–H activation strategy. …”
