Recent Developments and Biological Activities of N-Substituted Carbazole Derivatives: A Review

Abstract: Abstract:Carbazoles represent an important class of heterocycles. These have been reported to exhibit diverse biological activities such as antimicrobial, antitumor, antiepileptic, antihistaminic, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antidiarrhoeal, analgesic, neuroprotective and pancreatic lipase inhibition properties. A series of carbazole derivatives such as N-substituted carbazoles, benzocarbazoles, furocarbazoles, pyrrolocarbazoles, indolocarbazoles, imidazocarbazoles, etc. have been synthesized. The N-subst… Show more

“…Carbazole (C 12 H 9 N), also named dibenzopyrrole or diphenylenimine, is an N-containig heterocyclic compound discovered by Graebe and Glaser in 1872 [ 42 ]. Its structure consists of two benzene ring fused on either side of a central pyrrole ring ( Figure 2 ) [ 43 ]. Carbazole represents an important class of heterocycles with several advantages.…”

“…The structure of MDMB-CHMCZCA, a semi-systematic name for m ethyl d i m ethyl b utanoate- c yclo h exyl m ethyl c arba z ole c arbox a mide, is related to the structure of MDMB-CHMICA, but contains an N -alkylated carbazole instead of an indole core. Carbazoles are the core structures of an emerging group of cannabimimetics [11–12]. Several N -alkylated carbazole-3-carboxamides were patented by Diaz, Diaz, and Petrov in 2012 as tricyclic cannabinoid receptor modulators, explored against neuropathic pain [13].…”

“…69 Carprofen is a carbazole-based drug used in the treatment of pain in veterinary science. 70 However, more recently, the visible-light-mediated synthesis of carbazoles with a Cu-based sensitizer and the use of continuous-flow conditions resulted in an approximately 12-fold decrease in reaction time (Scheme 12a). 71 In an alternative approach to carbazoles, aryl azides were used as a photochemical reagent allowing access to more complex heterocycles under UV-LED irradiation in a continuous flow reactor.…”
