Recent Development of Functional Chitosan-Based Hydrogels for Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Applications

Abstract: Chitosan is a promising naturally derived polysaccharide to be used in hydrogel forms for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. The multifunctional chitosan-based hydrogels have attractive properties such as the ability to encapsulate, carry, and release the drug, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-immunogenicity. In this review, the advanced functions of the chitosan-based hydrogels are summarized, with emphasis on fabrications and resultant properties reported in literature from the recent dec… Show more

“…Incorporating chitosan in hydrogels ensures improved biocompatibility and biodegradability, as well as elevated resistance to deformation and collapse [49,50]. Chitosan-based hydrogels have anti-bacterial abilities linked to the chitosan's positively charged amino groups that can interact with negatively charged components of the bacterial cell wall, increasing permeability and leading to cell damage [51].…”

“…These hydrogels are also valuable in the manufacture of adaptable surfaces or soft smart actuators [97,100]. In addition to biodegradability and biocompatibility, chitosan-based hydrogels are characterized by mechanical strength and elasticity, which may be adjusted by the cross-linking process and the addition of various photo-sensitive components [49]. The latter allows it to absorb contaminants, which is valuable in water purification [101].…”

“…By adding functional groups such as amino, sulfur, carboxyl, and alkyl, the adsorption capacity of hydrogels can be improved. The most important parameters influencing the grafting percentage are initiator type, initiator concentration, grafting time, monomer type, monomer concentration, and temperature [ 174 , 175 , 176 , 177 , 178 ]. Other factors that can influence the properties of grafted or functionalized CS are the molecular structure, length, and number of side chains [ 179 ].…”

“…Chitosan is a homopolysaccharide obtained from the deacetylation of chitin [ 1 , 2 ]. Chitosan is widely available, inexpensive, biocompatible, anti-immunogenic, antibacterial, antifungal, and functionalizable due to the presence of alcoholic and amino groups in its chain [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]. Chitosan is used in the biomedical field for drug and gene delivery, as a scaffold for the growth of various biological tissues both alone and in combination with other biomaterials, in biosensing, and in the treatment of diseases [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
