Recent advances in transparent / translucent polycrystalline Sialon ceramics

Abstract: The transparent polycrystalline ceramics have acquired an interest in different fields such as transparent armor windows, cutting tools, IR windows, wear and scratch resistant parts (watches, bearings, and displays), and synthetic opals and rubies. In recent years, the transparent ceramics are applied in lasers and high power solid state lighting as a luminescent material. Different types of transparent polycrystalline ceramics were reported for different applications. However, there are few transparent cerami… Show more

“…α-SiAlONs are isostructural with α-Si 3 N 4 in which chemical binding of m and n (Si-N) are substituted by Al-N (m) and Al-O (n) bonds, respectively, the schematic diagram of which is shown in Figure2[136][137][138]. In addition, supplementary cation for the stability of crystal lattice of α-SiAlONs is needed.…”

“…Coble et al, and the Al 2 O 3 translucent ceramic for high pressure sodium lamps was released by General Electric Cop. 62) Subsequently, translucent ceramics have been used in solid-state lasers, 63,64) solid-state lighting, [65][66][67] magnetooptical materials, [68][69][70] and scintillators [71][72][73][74] because they have merits such as high thermal property, high mechanical strength, high uniformity, and cost-effectiveness compared to single crystals. In addition, translucent ceramics can be doped with activated ions with higher concentrations and synthesized at lower temperatures.…”
