“…The counts with the remaining media Rhowed little variation, giving viabilities of the order of 50-60y0. A further series of experiments showed that identical counts were obtained with the modified ISA medium when the culture was diluted with 3 different diluents (Postgate's (1966) medium N, Tryptone Soya Broth (Oxoid) and & strength Ringer's solution, each supplemented with 0.1% (w/v) of both reducing agents). Similar results wen?…”

“…There appears to be, as yet, no medium suitable for the enumeration of Desulfotornaculum spp. It may suffice, in some instances, to detect only their presence in natural ecosystems by incubating samples in Postgate's (1966) modification of Baars' medium at both 30 and 55", after heating to destroy vegetative cells. It may be possible to obtain a closer estimate of cell numbers by either using a MPN multiple tube technique with modified Baars' medium or adding further supplements, perhaps vitamins, to the modified ISA medium.…”

“…The processes in which sulphate-reducing bacteria are able to impinge on man's economy have been reviewed on many occasions (Postgate 1960(Postgate , 1965(Postgate , 1982(Postgate , 1984LeGall & Postgate 1973). These involve the areas of water, soil and sand pollution; waste purification; mineral deposit formation; gas contamination; paper technology; food spoilage; animal nutrition; and various other biotechnological effects.…”

“…(b) Activities of sulphate-reducing bacteria Reviews on sulphate-reducing bacteria have been published by Bunker (1936), Postgate (1959Postgate ( , 1960aPostgate ( , 1965) and Starkey (1961). These organisms not only cause anaerobic corrosion of buried iron or steel but spoil stored petrol and cutting oil emulsions, corrode oil well casings, block oil or gas producing sands, blacken paper pulp and form hydrogen sulphide in natural and manufactured gases; they have even caused aircraft to be grounded.…”
