Recent advances in synthesis, properties, and applications of phosphorene

Abstract: Since its first fabrication by exfoliation in 2014, phosphorene has been the focus of rapidly expanding research activities. The number of phosphorene publications has been increasing at a rate exceeding that of other two-dimensional materials. This tremendous level of excitement arises from the unique properties of phosphorene, including its puckered layer structure. With its widely tunable band gap, strong in-plane anisotropy, and high carrier mobility, phosphorene is at the center of numerous fundamental st… Show more

“…2,3 Exfoliated few-layer BP has been a focus of several studies and is promising for applications in electronics, optoelectronics, energy storage, gas sensing, catalysis and chemical/biosensing. [4][5][6][7][8][9] However, any practical implementation of BP is hampered by its susceptibility to ambient conditions. 10,11 The material degrades rapidly (within few hours to days depending on BP thickness) when exposed to the environment.…”

“…The amorphous phosphorus layer is deposited on desired substrates as silicon using vacuum evaporation in a direct-current plasma reactor in a controllable fashion. [8][9][10][11][12][13] Direct formation of the crystalline phosphorene flakes on desired substrates has always been a technological challenge. Direct transformation from red phosphorus to black can be achieved at a temperature of 300 C on desired substrates as silicon, although mica and glass can also be used.…”

“…A possible new application for 2D semiconductors is simulated by Qiu et al, 2 showing that nanopores in 2D materials can be used to detect DNA methylation, a potential biomarker for early cancer detection. Wan et al3 present a new possible application for graphene in photodetectors for UV light while Akhtar et al 4 review recent advances related to phosphorene.I invite all my colleagues working on 2D materials to submit their most important results and reviews to our new journal. Our editorial team is composed of researchers active in the field, with a diverse and deep portfolio of expertise, and we are all committed to the future of this journal and the field it represents.…”
