Recent Advances in Production of Bioethanol from Lignocellulosic Biomass

Abstract: Ethanol is considered the most potential next generation automotive fuel because it is carbon-neutral and could be produced from renewable resources like lignocellulosic biomass. There are some technological barriers such as pretreatment, saccharification of cellulose and hemicellulose matrix, and simultaneous fermentation of hexose and pentose sugars which needs to be addressed for efficient conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to bioethanol. This paper reviews the various process options and kinetic models … Show more

“…Keywords: evolutionary adaptation, xylose, Kluyveromyces marxianus, ethanol, xylitol inTrODUcTiOn Several environmental issues including global warming, climate change, CO2, and CO emission are major concern nowadays, which are primarily caused by conventional transportation fuels and burning of the crop residues (Kumar et al, 2009). To cure these issues, a sustainable process should be developed to produce alternative transportation fuel along with utilization of crop residues.…”

“…To cure these issues, a sustainable process should be developed to produce alternative transportation fuel along with utilization of crop residues. Lignocellulosic ethanol production could be a better solution to resolve these issues, which has already been proved as better alternative to conventional fuels including gasoline (Kumar et al, 2009(Kumar et al, , 2010. Lignocellulosic waste has also been found as a better source for economic bioethanol production due to its abundance and low cost (Kumar et al, 2010;Sharma et al, 2016).…”

“…Elixir is an oral solution drug form that has alcohol as a cosolvent; meanwhile, tincture is ethanol or a hydroalcohol-containing solution made out of plant or chemical compounds [5]. Ethanol also has the potential of becoming a next-generation renewable automobile fuel, such as lignocellulose biomass [6].…”

“…Most of the potential ethanologens that are in industrial use belong to mesophilic group (28-35º C) [1,2,3,4,5]. However, bioethanol production by thermophiles has certain advantages over mesophiles and it needs to be investigated for ethanol production.…”
