Recent Advances in Pipeline Monitoring and Oil Leakage Detection Technologies: Principles and Approaches

Abstract: Pipelines are widely used for the transportation of hydrocarbon fluids over millions of miles all over the world. The structures of the pipelines are designed to withstand several environmental loading conditions to ensure safe and reliable distribution from point of production to the shore or distribution depot. However, leaks in pipeline networks are one of the major causes of innumerable losses in pipeline operators and nature. Incidents of pipeline failure can result in serious ecological disasters, human … Show more

“…Petroleum products in this context refer to the fuel components like premium motor spirit, domestic pure kerosene, and automotive gas oil [1]. The transportation of this products (petroleum) is structured from refineries to the depot through piping networks [2], and to the individual marketers using automobile through road networks. These activities require adequate coordination, monitoring and effective control.…”

“…Possible causes for inland oil spills include pipeline leaks, road-tanker accidents, insufficient bonding, aircraft accidents, wars, and conflicts. It is therefore essential to develop methodologies to detect petroleum in soil [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] and water bodies [15][16][17][18] to assess damage and develop solutions for places contaminated by petroleum spills [19][20][21].…”
