Recent Advances in Internet of Things (IoT) Infrastructures for Building Energy Systems: A Review

Abstract: This paper summarises a literature review on the applications of Internet of Things (IoT) with the aim of enhancing building energy use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). A detailed assessment of contemporary practical reviews and works was conducted to understand how different IoT systems and technologies are being developed to increase energy efficiencies in both residential and commercial buildings. Most of the reviewed works were invariably related to the dilemma of efficient heating systems in … Show more

“…Since their inception, IoT devices have not received the timely upgrade when it comes to the evolution of hardware and software stack [ 15 , 16 ]. Even the communication protocols that came into existence in the late 1980s were ported to cater to the needs of the IoT devices much later; a similar pattern can be observed on other technical innovations as well [ 17 ]. The ignorance ( , accessed on 21 December 2021) even continues on the upgrade and security cycles [ 18 ] where the lack of timely upgrades and a proactive approach towards security has exposed the IoT ecosystem to various types of attacks.…”

“…Real-time monitoring helps households reduce more energy consumption than monitoring through monthly electricity bills [9], [10]. There have been a great number of studies on electrical energy meters using IoT [11]. The statistics of the different technological and functional aspects found in the literature review are illustrated in Table 1.…”
