Recent advances in gel technologies for topical and transdermal drug delivery

Abstract: Transdermal drug delivery systems are a constant source of interest because of the benefits that they afford in overcoming many drawbacks associated with other modes of drug delivery (i.e. oral, intravenous). Because of the impermeable nature of the skin, designing a suitable drug delivery vehicle that penetrates the skin barrier is challenging. Gels are semisolid formulations, which have an external solvent phase, may be hydrophobic or hydrophilic in nature, and are immobilized within the spaces of a three-di… Show more

“…Vehicle composition has been shown to influence the release properties of the incorporated drug and the penetration ability across/into the skin and may also improve the skin condition 3,4,33 . To examine the effect of the vehicle on the release of liposomally entrapped diclofenac sodium, different types of liposomes were incorporated into the following vehicles: the hydrogel, the cream base (O/W emulsion) and DMS base.…”

“…Therefore, interactions between the vehicle, skin and drug can influence the final therapeutic effect of the applied formulation 1,2 . For this reason, the selection of an appropriate vehicle is an important factor in increasing the efficacy of a topically applied drug 3,4 .…”

“…As hydrogels are thermo-sensitive, therefore as the temperature increased, the percentage of weight loss was faster as compared to bigel formulations. Oleogels are known to be more resistant to temperature changes 7,31 , therefore the as the fish oil ratio increased in bigel formulations so does the thermal stability Fig. 4b .…”
