Recent Advances in Forensic DNA Analysis

Abstract: Forensic DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) analysis or DNA profiling has played a major role in the criminal justice system. New techniques and technologies for DNA profiling continue to evolve every year. This paper reviews the literature reported during January 2011 through June 2013 in the field of forensic DNA analysis. Recent advances in almost all aspects of DNA analysis-which include sample collection, storage, and pretreatment, DNA extraction, DNA quantitation, quality assurance of DNA testing, and DNA datab… Show more

“…The involvement of the man in this particular case was proved as his profile was also generated from the vaginal swab and bite mark swab, which negated any chances of it being a coincidence. The forensic use of DNA Profiling (Identifiler coupled with Y-filer) is a major contribution to a technology which can help not only in including the culprit but also to exclude the innocent [24]. The minor DNA component is generally undetectable below a ratio of 1:25-1:50 for autosomal mixtures [19,25].…”

“…[16][17][18] Among the various techniques of biosensing such as surface plasmon resonance and UV-Vis spectroscopy and optical and electrochemical sensing, the last one has received immense attention due to its specific characteristics of high specificity, ease of fabrication, short response time, portability, and cost effectiveness. 19 This study is the first report of an electrochemical, on-chip DNA hybridization sensor for the early detection of PC. DNA sensors are widely explored, and significant progress has been made to design efficient gene sensors.…”

“…Forensic DNA has played a vital role in the criminal justice system. It allows effective human identification [27,28,29]. Some other applications include the field of bioelectronics, photodynamic therapy, a clinical diagnosis which is based on the interaction of DNA with a different chemical probe [30].…”
