Studies on the biology of cancer are multiplying and have been giving significant repercussions on the care of cancer patients, and there is a growing need to evaluate the biology of the tumor. Conventional tissue biopsies currently represent the gold standard in the diagnosis of cancer, but they are not suitable for serial analysis because of the need for invasive procedures, besides being able to present a high risk of life and also impossibility of reaching surgical in some tumors. To solve this obstacle, the use of the Liquid Biopsy, which analyzes the presence of biomarkers released by cancer cells, such as circulating tumor cells (CTCs), tumor cell DNA (ctDNA) and exosomes is being discussed. These techniques are non-invasive or minimally invasive and collect their samples from peripheral blood, plasma and serum, urine, saliva and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). As they are already being used in the treatment of several histopathological types of cancer, these new techniques generally represent a revolution in the understanding of early diagnosis, choice of personalized treatment, follow-up of the treatment response in real time, detection of minimal residual disease and prognosis for malignant neoplasms. The objective of this study was to present a literature review to clarify the fundamental molecular and clinical aspects involved in this revolutionary diagnostic technique by extracting the data from the sample. The development of rapid biosensing platforms is an integral part for the detection of many diseases, as well as important clinical biomarkers. So far, many new biosensing technologies have been described in literature but many of these novel platforms remain noncommercializable due to challenges in fabrication process, operational conditions as well as other cost concerns. Hence, there is a need to develop efficient and cost‐effective biosensing platforms and of the types available from literature, surface acoustic wave (SAW) biosensors have certain standout attributes. The simple manufacturing requirements of SAW‐based biosensor and its wide operating frequency range have produced promising outcome for bio‐detection and this has rendered this technological platform as a serious contender for point‐of‐care biosensor design. So far, SAW devices are reported for the detection of various bioactive targets of clinical importance and several designs are already commercialized. In this review, the latest development of SAW technologies in recent years for the detection of a broad range of biomolecules is presented and some of the challenges as well as potential future developments of SAW biosensors are highlighted.

Among the main challenges faced in cancer research, early detection, metastatic pathways and biomarker discovery are being tackled both by researchers and technology‐based companies. The development of novel technologies that can advance the state‐of‐the‐art for those defined challenges is critical in order to enhance the survival rates as well as to significantly lower cancer associated costs, not to mention social and human impact. In the recent years, the field of liquid biopsy has grown tremendously due to its capacity to obtain and study tumor material in a non‐invasive way. Liquid biopsy arises as an alternative diagnostic tool based on the analysis of biomarkers present in body fluids. The characterization of those biomarkers is commonly made by already well‐established standard technologies, usually limited in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, multiplexing, high‐throughput, and/or speed of analysis. Unfortunately, highly sensitive molecular diagnostic technologies still have high associated costs preventing their universal application. In this review, the authors aim to provide the reader with a general comprehension on how surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy can overcome those bottlenecks. The combination of SERS and liquid biopsy may fulfill the holy grail of the so‐called precision medicine, ultimately contributing to the dream of cancer chronification.
