Recent advances in epoxy resin, natural fiber-reinforced epoxy composites and their applications

Abstract: The versatile characteristic of epoxy and its diversity made it suitable for different industrial applications such as laminated circuit board, electronic component encapsulations, surface coatings, potting, fiber reinforcement, and adhesives. However, the pervasive applications in many high-performance field limited the epoxy use because of their delamination, low impact resistance, inherent brittleness, and fracture toughness behavior. The limitations of epoxy can be overcome by incorporation and modificatio… Show more

“…FRs are the chemical substance that are being added to materials both to constrain and delay the spread of fire after ignition or to discontinue the polymer combustion process . FRs have been classified based on their chemical constituents, ways of incorporation and their working mode as displayed in Fig.…”

“…[8] Sisal fiber has been used extensively as reinforcement in several thermoplastic composites such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), [9] polystyrene (PS), [10] polypropylene (PP), [11] and polyvinyl chloride. [12] Sisal fiber is used also for preparation of green composites with thermosetting [13,14] and elastomeric polymers. [15,16] HDPE is a petroleum derivative that is widely used in our daily lives such as in bottles, toys, packaging materials, chemical containers, and household goods.…”

“…A significant advantage is that the natural fibers would be simply disposed of at the end of their life cycle by decomposition or by recovery of their specific calorific value in heating chamber, which is not possible in conventional reinforcement such as glass fibers . Different types of natural fibers like sisal, flax, jute, banana, hemp, rami.e., coir, and pineapple leaf have been investigated for reinforcement . Sisal fiber is one of the most promising natural fibers for application where the combination of electrical and mechanical properties is required .…”
